Central Bank of Sudan
Announcement
Pursuant to the powers and responsibilities of the Central Bank of Sudan under its 2002 Act, and in line with its mandate to protect the national currency, maintain the stability of its exchange rate, and contribute to overall economic stability, and in response to the negative impacts of the ongoing war in the country — particularly the widespread looting carried out by the rebel militia of the Central Bank of Sudan’s premises and the Sudan Currency Printing Press in Khartoum, which resulted in the circulation of large quantities of counterfeit and non-standard banknotes of the SDG 1,000 and SDG 500 denominations, leading to a significant increase in cash liquidity with negative effects on price stability —
Based on the above, and in accordance with the powers of the Governor of the Central Bank of Sudan under Article 6(a) and Article 25(1) of the 2002 Central Bank of Sudan Act, the Central Bank of Sudan hereby announces the following:
A new SDG 1,000 banknote will be issued in the coming period with the specifications, colors, and security features attached to this announcement.
Commercial banks and their branches will continue to receive the SDG 1,000 and SDG 500 banknotes from citizens, deposit them into their accounts, and enable them to access their balances through various payment methods.
Commercial banks will facilitate the process of opening accounts for citizens who do not currently hold bank accounts, allowing them to deposit their SDG 1,000, SDG 500, and other banknotes, and to benefit from banking services, including electronic payment services.
The Central Bank of Sudan will later announce the date on which the current issues of the SDG 1,000 and SDG 500 banknotes will cease to be legal tender.
