Announcement
Based on the powers and mandates of the Central Bank of Sudan as stipulated in its 2002 Act, and within the framework of its responsibilities to protect the national currency and achieve monetary stability, and as a continuation of efforts to replace the 1,000 and 500 pound banknotes, the Central Bank of Sudan announces the end of the second phase of the currency exchange process on Friday, 15/05/2026 at 6:00 PM. This phase commenced on 15/04/2026 in the following states:
Khartoum State – Al Jazira State – and selected localities in White Nile State that were not included in the first phase.
Commercial bank branches will operate on Friday, 15/05/2026 from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM to receive cash deposits from citizens holding the old targeted banknotes, and to deposit them into bank accounts, while enabling customers to withdraw, transfer, and use their balances through various payment methods.
Continuation of facilitating bank account opening procedures for citizens who do not have accounts, ensuring financial inclusion and access to banking services.
Compliance with the regulations and procedures governing the exchange process issued by the Central Bank of Sudan, including adherence to cash withdrawal limits and encouragement of electronic payment methods, as well as strict adherence to the announced end date of the exchange process.
Upon the closure of banks on Friday, 15 May 2026 at 6:00 PM, the exchange process shall be considered concluded, and the old 1,000 and 500 pound banknotes targeted by the exchange shall cease to be legal tender in the states of Khartoum, Al Jazira, and White Nile.
In the remaining states not included in the first and second phases, the old banknotes shall remain legal tender and valid for circulation until further notice from the Central Bank of Sudan, in a manner that ensures the protection of citizens’ funds and rights in those states.
The Central Bank of Sudan urges all citizens to promptly deposit their holdings of the targeted banknotes through banking channels on or before 15/05/2026, the final day of the exchange process. The Bank emphasizes that this step comes as part of strengthening confidence in the national currency and supporting economic stability.
