Announcement of the Beginning of Currency Replacement for the 1,000 and 500 Sudanese Pound Banknotes

The Operations and Monitoring Room for Currency Replacement at the Central Bank of Sudan issued a circular today, Sunday, 8 December 2024, regarding the replacement of the 1,000 and 500 Sudanese Pound banknotes through deposits into bank accounts. According to the decision, the replacement of the withdrawn denominations (1,000 and 500 pounds) will take place from 10 December 2024 until 23 December 2024.

The Operations and Monitoring Room for Currency Replacement announced that the targeted states for replacement are six states: Red Sea, Kassala, Gedaref, River Nile, Northern, and Blue Nile.

The Central Bank instructed bank branches in the targeted states to accept cash deposits of the withdrawn denominations during the specified period, to extend working hours, and to operate during official holidays in coordination with Central Bank branches and security authorities in the relevant states to facilitate the replacement process.

It also directed bank branches in non-targeted states to refrain from accepting any cash deposits of the withdrawn denominations starting from this date.

In the same context, the Operations and Monitoring Room for Currency Replacement instructed bank branches in all states to deposit any withdrawn denominations in their possession into Central Bank branches starting from 10 December 2024, and to withdraw from their current accounts at the Central Bank to replenish their vaults as needed, while adhering to the set limits for customer cash withdrawals and the ceilings for transfers through banking applications in accordance with Central Bank regulations.
