Launch of the Second Phase of Currency Exchange

Based on the powers and mandates of the Central Bank of Sudan as stipulated in its 2002 Act, and within the framework of its responsibilities to protect the national currency and achieve monetary stability, and as a continuation of efforts to replace the old 1,000 and 500 pound banknotes, the Central Bank of Sudan announces the launch of the second phase of the currency exchange process in Khartoum State, Al Jazira State, and the completion of the exchange in the localities of White Nile State that were not included in the first phase. This phase will run from 15 April 2026 to 15 May 2026.

Accordingly, the following has been decided:

1. The issuance and circulation of the new 1,000 pound (third edition) and 500 pound (second edition) banknotes, featuring the approved specifications and security features attached to this announcement, and the acceptance of the old banknotes during the specified exchange period.

2. Commercial bank branches will receive cash deposits of the old targeted banknote editions from citizens and deposit them into bank accounts, enabling clients to withdraw, transfer, and use their balances through various payment methods.

3. Facilitation of bank account opening procedures for citizens who do not have accounts, ensuring financial inclusion and access to banking services.

4. Compliance with the regulations and procedures governing the exchange process issued by the Central Bank of Sudan, including adherence to cash withdrawal limits and encouraging the use of electronic payment methods.

5. Extension of banking working hours during the exchange period in coordination with the Central Bank of Sudan and relevant authorities, to ensure smooth operations and efficient service delivery.

6. Suspension of dealings in the old 500 and 1,000 pound banknotes in the mentioned states after the end of the specified period, and considering them as non-legal tender.

The Central Bank of Sudan urges all citizens to promptly deposit their holdings of the targeted banknotes through banking channels within the specified period. The Bank emphasizes that this step comes as part of strengthening confidence in the national currency and supporting economic stability.

And God grants success,

Central Bank of Sudan
